Mr. Carruthers had never been to Memphis. He grew up in a small Mississippi community where alcohol was always available, but treatment for addiction was not. A friend from church agreed to drive him to Memphis to look a place to get sober. He spent two days in a local hotel and eventually found his way to Court Square Park, where he confessed his need to get sober with a group of homeless men there. They convinced him to pay $15 for the information, but they directed him to the Hospitality Hub.

His intake counselors directed him to the Breakfast Club Program, but Thomas was able to get him into Dozier House less than two-weeks from the day that he set foot in Memphis. After four months of treatment, Mr. Carruthers was free to get a job, while still living at the treatment facility. He hired on with a roofing company, and Dozier House had him to give them 50-percent of each check, which they put into a savings account and gave back to him when he graduated 8-months later.

Mr. Carruthers dropped by the Hub (in his new car) recently, to let us know that he is incredibly thankful for all that we did for him when he showed up at our door. He has a great job, a downtown apartment, and he has gotten back in touch with his three sisters whom he had become estranged from during years of alcohol abuse. He said, “I have always needed a place to stay. . . never had a place of my own. It is gonna be good to have my sisters come up and stay at my place during Memphis in May!”
